We, the Akin family are native and long time San Diegans who are heavily rooted in the local community. Master Brewer Matt Akin got his start at AleSmith Brewing Company where he worked his way up from scrubbing kegs to Head Brewer in under four years. Matt was at AleSmith for over eight years. During his tenure there the brewing team won many medals and was named Small Brewery and Small Brewer of the Year at GABF in 2008. He left AleSmith in 2011 with his mind set on making his own way, joining his wife Rachael and parents Jim and Margaret to form Benchmark Brewing, opening the doors in June of 2013. In the short time Benchmark has been open the brewing team has been awarded GABF Gold and Silver Medals for Oatmeal Stout in the Session Beer Category (2014 & 2016) as well as several awards from the International Beer Competition here in San Diego. Benchmark is distributed locally to bars, restaurants, and bottle shops. Our tasting room at the brewery is open seven days a week, please check google for hours as they are adjusted seasonally.
