Matt got his start at AleSmith Brewing Company where he worked his way up from scrubbing kegs to Head Brewer in under four years. Matt was at AleSmith for over eight years. During his tenure there the brewing team won many medals and was named Small Brewery and Small Brewer of the Year at GABF in 2008. He left AleSmith in 2011 with his mind set on making his own way. Matt is a native San Diegan, he attended St. Augustine High School in North Park before he went on to study at UC San Diego where he earned a Bachelors of the Arts in Sociology. Matt earned his Certificate of Brewing Sciences from the American Brewers Guild in 2004. He has been a member of the local homebrew club QUAFF since 2002, is a national level BJCP certified beer judge, and a GABF beer judge.
Rachael is the design force behind Benchmark. She manages the brand, sales and marketing, the brewery’s events and tasting room, as well as all aspects of design. She is a fifth generation San Diegan, who attended the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, and holds a BS in Interior Design from the Art Institute of San Diego. Rachael’s career began in theater management before she transitioned to commercial interior design and graphics where she focused on patient experience and brand identity for large healthcare facilities, specializing in children’s hospitals. She has been a member of the local homebrew club QUAFF since 2002, is a BJCP certified beer judge, a GABF beer judge, a member of the Pink Boots Society. She currently holds seats on the boards of directors for the San Diego Brewers Guild, and Save Starlight, a local non profit aimed at reviving the Starlight Bowl in Balboa Park.
Jim is a retired IT executive who spent 35 years working at a job that is almost exclusively reserved for computer nerds. Now, he says it’s time to do something fun, and what could be more fun than beer? From nerd to beer geek, it’s a lateral promotion.
Margaret is surprised and delighted to find a brewery in her life. With a BA in English and American Literature from UCSD and a long career as a technical writer, she finds herself writing the brewery’s policies and procedures. “Ah, quality control,” she says. “It’s a glamorous job, but someone has to do it.”
Mike has started as a bartender here at Benchmark and has movend into a production roll in the brewhouse. In addition to his brewing and packaging duties he runs the cask program, and often takes on special projects. He is a Cicerone certified beer server, and holds a BA in music production and engineering from the Berkly College of Music
Ryan has been in beer sales for some time. He hails from Santa Cruz, CA and made the move to San Diego a couple years back. He's an experienced sales rep with roots in the craft beer industry, having sold most recently for Stone Distribution.
Mark handles the logistics of distribution among (quite a few) other things here at Benchmark. He is a Minnesota native who relocated to sunny San Diego just a couple of years back. Mark is a Certified Beer Server through the Cicerone Program.
Nichole is our events maven, putting in time serving beer at festivals and representing our brand at all sorts of off-site events. She can also be found behind our tasting room bar occasion. She is well acquainted with the San Diego beer scene having held positions at several notable local breweries. She is currently serving on the Board of Directors as Chapter Leader Liaison for the Pink Boots Society.
We currently partner with the UCSD Brewing Science and Technology program to welcome interns into our brewhouse.
We believe that in order for something to be a craft there has to be a tradition of passing knowledge from one to another, from master to apprentice, it is with this in mind that we welcome our interns.
